Trend Focus: Fruit & Vegetables In Interior Design
We’ve spoken a lot recently about nature and the beauty it has to offer us. We’ve looked at responsibly sourced materials that help the environment, sustainability and the beauty of flowers, but today we’re looking at other things that grow from the ground – fruit and veggies!
Vegetables in interior design
As we’ve mentioned before, florals have been a popular component of interior design for decades – centuries even. That said, as many of us are starting to look toward self-sustainability, we’re seeing a shift from celebrating our garden’s flowers in the home, in favour of our garden’s edible produce.
Instead of roses, orchids and daisies, many stylish designers are looking toward carrots, mushrooms and even artichokes. These ground-grown goodies don’t just bring joy to our plates, they’re also adding a jazzy twist to rooms around the UK.
With that in mind, lets see how you can live the good life and integrate the beauty of fruit and veg into your home décor.
How to use fruit and veg in interior design
Fruity designs can bring colour, vibrancy, and fun to your home. Because of these factors, you can use fruit well around the home. In the living or dining rooms, for example, you can look to more traditional designs where the pattern plays a secondary role to a rich, cosy colour.
For children’s rooms however, you can really dial up the fun factor of your interior design. Fruit patterns in a well fitted, cartoony style roller blind can bring an energising splash of colour while promoting healthy eating. In a fun, colourful design, they’ll really add a great twist your little one’s space.
Likewise, vegetable-inspired window furnishings, lampshade and cushions in a similar theme will work equally well for a child’s room.
Beyond kid’s rooms, veggie designs work extremely well in kitchen windows or even in living areas that are themed around Cottagecore or grandmillennial schools of design.
All that said, don’t forget that interior design is all about self-expression. If you’re simply mad about artichokes, use an artichoke pattern in the bedroom – if your desperate to have cherries decorating your bathroom window, don’t let anyone tell you that you cant!
Using window furnishing for windowsill gardens
Throughout this blog we’ve spoken about the bounty of produce from our own gardens. Following the example of Barbara and Tom Good in the BBC’s The Good Life, thousands around the UK are growing their own food be it tomatoes, carrots or zucchini.
While many are enjoying this connection to nature, there are numerous people around the country without gardens who would love nothing more than to see tasty veggies grow before cooking them. If you are such a person, do not despair!
Even in an apartment you can grow a few bits and pieces which you can add to your diet. If you have a large window, you could look to grow some small but delicious tomatoes, and even with a small window you can grow a great range of tasty herbs such as basil, spinach, arugula, and radicchio.
We all know that the core components for healthy plants – be they treats for the eye or the tongue – are water and light. When outside, it’s easy to water your plants and let the sun shine on them directly. If you’re growing plants in a flat however, you may think you’d have to have the nearest window open 24/7, right? Wrong!
Fortunately, there are a great selection of window furnishings that allow natural sun light to filter into a space without sacrificing on privacy.
Sheer curtains are a perfect choice for such a window! Allusion blinds also offer fantastic levels of privacy allowing light into a room without people being able to look in. You can learn more in our Introducing Allusion Blinds blog.
