Besides a few grey days from time to time, the weather is getting better, the birds are chirping, and colour has returned to the world. Summer is here! In today’s blog, we’ll be looking at a remarkable summer colour that’s growing in popularity and the good news is, it’s equally great during the other seasons. It is of course the colour lilac.

What colour is Lilac?

Named after the striking flower, lilac is a tone of violet, a light shade of purple with hints of pink.

Similar to colours such as eucalyptus and lavender, lilac is one of those colours you can almost smell by seeing it, it’s that ingrained in our psyche. Like many shades of purple, lilac is often under used however you can make an eye-catching and unique space without going too far with super bold colours such as lime green or electric blue.

Why pick Lilac?

Lilac is comforting and homely, inspiring nurturing qualities within us.

Like most shades of purple and pink, lilac is associated with such qualities as extroversion and friendliness. As a result, this colour is an excellent choice for spaces where you entertain guests  –  for example the living or dining rooms.

Use lilac as either a block colour or as a part of a fun pattern. Wallpaper, throws, and window furnishings are excellent vehicles for brining lilac into your space. The colour interacts in a delicate way with light therefore a curtain or Roman blind is a great option! You can also use lamp shades and cushions when you select lilac as a spot colour

What colours go with Lilac?

While it may seem difficult at first, lilac is a very easy colour to tie in with many others. Whether you’re looking to add lilac to an established theme, or starting from scratch, these colours partner particularly well with this trendy tone:

Lilac and white – white is a very striking colour to use in interior design. It’s fresh and soothing which makes it a perfect match for lilac. Lilac also provides you with the flexibility to use different shades of white with everything from pure white to ivory and parchment.

Lilac and blue – this combination may sound on the usual side of things but it’s really quite beautiful. The trick to enjoying the composition is to use a softer shade of lilac with a more full-bodied blue. Steer away from powder blues and instead opt for something a little punchier yet still pale. You could even try something a little more daring and choose a turquoise tone.

Lilac and yellow – an exciting and energising coupling if ever there was one. There is almost no tone of yellow that won’t work well with at least one shade or lilac. For something more reserved, look to pair your lilac colours with softer, warming shades of yellow. If you’d rather find something a little more youthful, paler shades of yellow will help your lilac pop.

Lilac and soft green – this one is the trickiest of our four options. A bold emerald green may feel relatively overpowering but a natural green – such as a sage or eucalyptus – will look excellent in a space blessed with lilac. Don’t forget, you can order up to eight free samples to choose the best colours for your home.

Lilac and lavender – both smell lovely and work well together as part of a harmonious interior design. The bouquet of elegance and calm they create can be enjoyed throughout the home, not only in living rooms and dining rooms, but in bathrooms and bedrooms too. These colours are a great combination but as they are closely related on the colour spectrum, look to use them in separate items for example a lilac blind with lavender cushions on a nearby sofa.
