An introduction to winter colour palettes

Winter is on the doorstep; storms are predicted and layering our clothes is becoming more and more essential. While many of us may prefer the warm, long days of summer, there is something magical about this time of year. Tones change from greens and brightly coloured petals to warming browns and oranges intermixed with icy blues and pure, snow whites. This end-of-year transition has inspired us for generations and today we’ll be looking at how you can enjoy the perfect winter colours palette for your décor this winter whether it’s to embrace the colours of the cold – or defend yourself from it.

Winter inspired interior design

A winter wonderland style inspired space is chic, sophisticated and captures the beauty of winter without needing thick jumpers and big log fires. Pale colours and slim profiles create a space that’s elegant and modern and while it’s seasonally inspired, they are fashionable the year round.

Beyond the classic use of brilliant whites, you can introduce other winter themed colours too to make your space as cool as possible!

Icy blues

Icy blue is a popular choice. It reminds us of those nostalgic Christmas evenings, icicles suspended from rooftops and the brilliance of the sky on the lighter days of the season. These pale blues might be associated with the cold, but they can electrify a space, making it not only trendy but welcoming too. Consider icy blue cushions and blue roller blinds to easily enjoy this colour in your home.

Dark blues and greens

Dark shades of blue green are a great supporting colour for wintery spaces. Similar to the dark natural ferns we’ll be bringing into our homes to celebrate the festive season, and for those who like new years walks on the beach, the chilly sea around our island; deep blue greens are very charming colours. Consider pairing these shades with a thick, luxurious material such as velvet – a dark blue green velvet curtain for example will make a true seasonal style statement in any home.

Smoky purple

Smoky shades of purple might seem a surprising choice, but few wintery vistas are as beautiful, or powerful, as frosty heather clad moorland. Rolling hillsides adorned with purple flowers is a fantastic environment to enjoy with a pair of sturdy boots, snug clothes and a woolly hat but you can enjoy it equally well as a colour in your home. Try to keep away from saturated bright purple and instead opt for greyer shades. A smoky purple roman blind and matching cushions in a neutral space will do wonders to your décor.

Natural green tones

Finally, consider natural green tones for an exciting contrast in your winter space. While the season may be synonymous with greenery dying away, evergreen plants become more important to us. Cactus greens and those greyer shades such as eucalyptus are both wintery yet hopeful colours reminding us of the nicer climate ahead. Warming winter interior design

If the idea of a winter inspired décor sends shivers down your spine, you can create an equally beautifully seasonal interior that welcomes the warmth using materials and colours.

Winter often inspires us to look back at simpler times and enjoy traditions of the past. As a result, using traditionally inspired colours and fabrics, you can create a really appealing, welcoming space that’s the perfect environment to battle through the cold.

Orange tones

With many of us seeking warmth wherever we can find it, it’s clear that reds and orange tones are suitable here. When used as part of traditional tartan or check patterns, or with warming heavy wools and velvets, these colours can help us feel warmer and more secure from the elements. Check out our red curtains and orange curtains for some inspiration for your home.

Dark blues

Dark inky blues are also popular as they help us feel calm and again, when the fabric sparkles with the light, it makes a home feel refined and friendly.

Dark woods

Dark woods too will help you feel warmer in winter. Providing a connection to nature it’s not only calming, but it also makes a space feel homely and snug. Look at our amazing ranges of wooden blinds and shutters to enjoy natural wood in your space. If you’re wanting to make a bathroom or kitchen more comfortable, consider equally attractive faux wooden blinds too!

Metallics

To contrast with the natural materials, consider metallic tones to add sparkling details. Metallic finish blinds and curtains, or metallic inners in a lampshade will provide a delicate difference within your décor.

How to make your home warmer in winter

Colours can help your space feel warmer, but the right material can make you physically warmer. Heavier materials will help to block cold air entering your space, and your increasingly expensive heat escaping.

Weighty velvet or wool curtains and Roman blinds are easy ways to improve your thermal efficiency. Moreover, because our Roman blinds and curtains are handmade here in the UK, you can enjoy a thermal lining with any of the fabrics we offer them in.
