A cosy reading corner or nook is the perfect place to retreat to when you need some alone time, whether that’s for a fleeting moment of peace and quiet, or if you want to get stuck into a new book without any distractions.

Do you want to create this special place in your home? It’s easier than you might think. This new nook will require very little space and can therefore be located in a number of areas, from the corner of your bedroom to the space under the stairs. Hallways and landings may also provide opportunities for cosy corners (remember, it is sensible to select an area of the home that’s relatively private and quiet).

Your cosy nook will need smart lighting, especially if you plan to read a lot or complete close work, like sketching or sewing. If possible, avoid strong artificial lights and include a well-angled task light. A floor lamp may work best, depending on the layout of the area. If this space benefits from a window, you’ll want to gain as much natural light as possible while maintaining a good level privacy. As such, your window treatment will be very important.

It’s vital that your cosy corner has comfortable seating. This might be in the form of a beanbag, a window seat or a squashy armchair. Amp up the comfort with cushions and throws. You may need to consider a desk chair if you’re looking to install a surface to work on. Remember, you should invest in a good quality desk chair that will support your back, especially if you’ll be sitting here for extended periods of time.

If your reading corner doesn’t have a desk, consider a coffee table or side table. You’ll need a place to pop your cup of tea, after all. Other items of furniture could include an ottoman or foot stool, along with a shelving unit for books and accessories.

Need some inspiration? We’ve gathered together a few of our favourite cosy corner designs and explain how to get the look with products from Blinds Direct

Get the look

Grey and blue decor in reading cornerFor a sophisticated and sumptuous look, select a window treatment that will coordinate with your chair and soft furnishings. Tones of blue and grey create  a tranquil ambience, whilst natural weaves and stoney accents add a sense of beachcomber chic. You could also recreate this look with a green colour palette, which again will offer a feeling of peacefulness.

Rustic decor reading cornerGet back to basics with a blend of natural wood and earthy tones, teamed with plenty of greenery. For the window, consider a wooden blind layered with contrasting curtains. Shutters would also work well for a more luxurious touch. Stick to a natural and earthy colour palette that is enhanced through different textures, including faux furs, silks and cotton blends.

Modern white decor in reading cornerStick to a simple scheme for contemporary luxe appeal. Achieve a more modern cosy corner by mixing high end fabrics with metallic finishes, including the curtain pole, the lamp stand and accessories. A statement lamp shade will give you the opportunity to be more playful; consider smokey glass, metal, or a subtle print in pastel tones.

Colourful orange decor reading corner office. For a fun and colourful approach, consider a brightly printed Roman blind layered with neutral curtains. This arrangement works particularly well if your cosy corner is located in a bay or box bay window, especially if you plan to draw the curtains at night to relax in the rest of the room. Choose coordinating cushions that will tie in with your corner design, making the link with the rest of the room more fluid.
