2020 is almost over (hurrah!) and with the transition to a hopefully brighter new year we’ll be seeing different themes and colours in the top 2021 interior design trends. In this blog we’ve compiled a top five of the most exciting design trends expected to appear or grow in the next 12 months.

Cottagecore

While it may sound like a type of rural rave music, Cottagecore is a design trend inspired by a desire to be at peace with nature and building an interior that’s symbiotic with the outdoors. This trend will see lots of beautiful wildflowers being brought into the house and natural fabrics used wherever possible.

To support this feeling of oneness with nature in the home, expect to see leafy tones as well as floral patterns in items including, but not limited to, lampshades, cushions and window dressings. For more inspiration, view our Cottagecore collection here.

Dark blue

Dark blue has been a stylish hit for style-conscious home decorators, and it is only expected to grow in popularity through 2021. According to the fine folks at Country Living, there has been an increase of 147.83% in Instagram photos of dark blue kitchens alone! This is a great foundation for this beautiful colour and we can’t wait to see how its used throughout the year.

If you want to test the dark blue waters with a couple of items before investing in a brand new kitchen, we strongly recommend you check out our dark blue velvet cushions which look great in any room, or a Roman blind in a similar tone that’s equally versatile. These items will add a striking effect to any space and if you want to expand the theme further, contribute to the wider ambience.

Earthy tones

Expect to see an increase in earthy tones. Again seeking to enhance a space using the power or nature, these natural tones will include classics such as off white, creams and stony greys, but will also see the inclusion of rusty tones, warming greens and deep, rich reds.

These comforting and powerful colours will help make our homes more comfortable and welcoming which is just what’s needed after such a tumultuous year.

An additional benefit for including earthy tones in any room is their versatility. Because these colours are soft and subtle, you can introduce elements of this trend into myriad other styles, especially Scandi and traditional. If you have a statement wall or some vibrantly coloured features in a room, the earthier tones will help to enrich them and make them stand out without getting in the way.

Sustainable modern design

You guessed it, our fourth 2021 trend prediction also has the environment at its heart. Sustainability has been a hot topic for a few years now, and rightly so! In 2021 we expect to see a rise in efforts to create a more sustainable home with the use of ethically sourced materials.

In an effort to reduce your home’s environmental impact consider using non-traditional materials in different rooms, be it the cabinets in your kitchen, the table in the dining room or even the blinds on your windows. At Blinds Direct we have a range of fantastic products made from recycled single use plastic bottles.  Available as Roman blindscurtainscushions and lamp shades, there are plenty of options for adding a sustainable cool to your home!

Environmentally-conscious decorators should also keep an eye out for our new and exciting range of stylish honeycomb blinds coming in 2021. The air pockets that form in the honeycomb cross-sections act as insulators reducing heat loss, saving money and protecting the planet.

japandi interior design trends 2021

Japandi style

So many things in life are great as a duo – fish and chips, cheese and wine, Wallace and Gromit; and in terms of interior design, the coming together of Scandi and Japanese style is second to none.

This must-have hybrid of two celebrated schools of design is minimal, warm and creates a calming effect in any room. It’s the perfect combination of wabi-sabi (the act of finding beauty in the imperfect) and Hygge (a feeling of comfort and homeliness).

In practice, this aesthetic sees the merging of pale, neutral Scandi tones with the richness of Japanese colour pallets. Both make great use of woods also, to enhance your connection with nature use beautiful unvarnished woods to help boost the energy and form of your home.

This trend is so great in fact that in January 2021 we’ll be exploring it in depth here, on our blog! Keep your eyes peeled for more after the festive break.

Interior design trends 2021 – Honourable mentions

Naturally there will be more than five trends starting to gather momentum throughout 2021. For example, in a reflection of the world’s increasingly digital life, we expect to see more tech inspired spaces stimulated by blue light. This “gamescape” design will feature acid tones of kiwi and primary blues that have elements of 80s pop.

Furthermore, there is expected to be a boom in roof windows and roof lanterns next year. If you are looking to install a roof window, or have one already that you’d like to enhance, consider a striking roof blind that will not only improve your window but contribute to your overall décor.

Herringbone floors will also become increasingly trendy throughout 2021. Such floors are often made from dark woods and nothing could tie it to your space better than an elegant wooden blind. With plenty of colours to chose from, we’re confident you’ll find the perfect wooden blinds match here.

Finally, don’t forget about Pantones’ twin colours of the year for 2021. You can read our Pantone colour of the year blog which explored this further.

These 2021 interior design trends are set to be great hits in the next 12 months. Whether you want to add subtle references to some of the above or go all in with totally redecorated spaces, we’ll have just the items for you. All our blinds, cushions, lampshades and curtains are crafted at our dedicated facility here in West Yorkshire and if you have any questions or get stuck, don’t hesitate to contact our friendly team.
