From bold prints and bright colours to the exquisite artworks and many natural elements of the African landscape, Afrocentric interior design is a trend that is becoming increasingly popular within the UK.  A design fusion of varying cultures and lifestyles inspired by Africa, Afrocentric interiors can be truly breath-taking. Read on to find out how you can interpret this striking style into your home…

Afrocentric interior design

Afrocentric décor is a combination of tribal cultures and lifestyles that span the continent of Africa. There isn’t a set rule book, or appearance for Afrocentric interiors. This look can be interpreted and reimagined depending on your own tastes to create a unique look for your home. However, there are some key concepts of Afrocentric design that are deep rooted throughout the style in the use of colour, fabric and textures, and natural materials.

Striking afrocentric colours

When it comes to creating an Afrocentric interior décor, the colour is one of the most effective ways of recreating the essence of an African landscape.

Enriching tones

The use of enriching tones, from ochres and terracotta to blues and greens, recalls the warmth of the sun and soil of the landscape, along with the plants, shrubs, and vegetation scattered across this vast continent. Incorporating the use of these rich tones into your home will create a warm atmosphere during both the summer and winter months.

Using rich tones for wallpapers and window coverings will create an impactful space, whilst curtains and Roman blinds will enhance a space without being overbearing. Add balance by contrasting enriching tones with accents of more delicate shades such as greys and off whites.

Colour blocking

Sticking with block colours on the walls allows for a stronger use of patterns, textures, and pieces of artwork, which overtime will evolve and create an Afrocentric décor full of charm and character. However, if you are feeling daring and like the idea of unleashing your wild side within your home, then colour blocking on the walls in the colours mentioned above, styled with bold tribal-esque prints and African wildlife symbolism will make your home feel as though it has teleported to the plains of Africa.

Afrocentric fabrics and textures

With a wide range of patterns to inspire you, from traditional tribal style geometrics to jungle and animal prints, fabrics and textures are some of the most impactful aspects of an Afrocentric interior.

Prints inspired by the different cultures of Africa vary from bright and bold fabrics to neutral tones and geometric style prints. Incorporating bright bold patterns will instantly transform your home adding a wonderful Afrocentric twist to the décor.

Animal prints are also an easy way to transform your home and give an African inspired feel to your space!  Select from a safari of prints, from zebras to elephants or even leopards! Whether you decide to go wild with large print curtains and Roman blinds or prefer a subtle twist through the use of lampshades, home furnishings, along with ornaments and artefacts, are the most effective way to build up an Afrocentric style.

Natural materials

Natural materials reconnect you with nature and may even have a positive impact on your health and wellbeing.  These are core elements we see throughout Afrocentric design, from wood to bamboo, and shells to raffia. Wooden artefacts are a popular styling choice and have a strong presence throughout Afrocentric designs as they are not only fashionable and chic, but they are hardwearing and will add longevity to your décor.

Styling your home with wooden accents can be made simple through the use of wooden blinds and shutters. Coming in a variety of colours and finishes, wooden window dressings will instantly elevate your décor, adding an elegant aesthetic to the space.

Raffia and wickers are other great assets within Afrocentric design, further adding depth and character to any given space. Combining these different elements within the home will capture the magic of Africa and provide you with a relaxing, enriched home.

An established trend that is becoming increasingly more popular in the UK, we hope our tips for implementing this trend in both subtle ways, with the use of warming shades and simple patterns, or boldly, with heavy patterns, chunky fabrics and a selection of interesting artefacts and ornaments, help you bring the warmth and variety of Afrocentric design to your home!
